Minister Ryan checks out Errigal New Homes in Gweedore

Minister for communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan TD was in Gweedore at the weekend where he formally launched the Errigal New Homes company on the Gaoth Dobhair industrial estate.

The company, that has been operating for about three years, recently moved into a 12,000 square foot unit on the industrial estate and employs twenty people with plans for further expansion in their passive housing business.

Udaras na Gaeltachta has backed the setup and development of the company that was formed under the Errigal New Homes name following the coming together of local men Pat Boyle, John Cannon, Micheal Roarty and Sean Davidson. The company is presently involved in a number of projects in Donegal and is also preparing to undertake works at a Dublin hospital, a project that will require in excess of thirteen kilometres of timber frame.

Pat Boyle of the company said that the demand for ecologically friendly houses is on the up in Donegal and as a result of their company has expanded in a very short time. He also revealed that representatives from the company will travel to Sweden soon to view the works there where this type of housing has been the norm for nearly thirty years.

Mr. Boyle explained that the idea of passive housing is even further beyond the benefit of timber framed house where energy savings of up to 40% can be achieved in comparison to a block built house. Errigal New Homes has however gone one step further offer a house that does not require a conventional heating system.

“We are using a ventilation type system with a heat exchange unit to heat the house and also offers fresh air and a nice comfortable living environment in a cost effective manner. We use thick layers of insulation, triple glazed windows and ensure the building is air tight to eliminate draughts. The cost of running a house of this type is about one tenth of that of a normal house built to current building standards.” He said.

The launch was attended by representatives from Udaras na Gaeltachta and public representatives including Minister Pat the Cope Gallagher and Deputy Dinny McGinley.
